About this study

This study, sponsored by the Life Center at Stanford, investigates how math is used in our everyday lives. Our main objective is to collect many short stories about how people experience mathematics.

STATEMENT OF CONSENT

The Math in a Minute Stories is part of a research project at the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning. The project is collecting stories of math in people’s lives. By agreeing to this statement of consent and by submitting your story to this website, the information you provide will be subject to research by members of the Family Math project team and may be selected to be viewed by the general public on the Family Math websites.  

User Conduct
Please be aware that the math in a minute story you submit might become publicly accessible, so you should not post any potentially damaging information about yourself or others such as relatives, friends and other people in your stories. Likewise, we ask that your stories be respectful of other people; do  not include first and last names, names of schools or towns, and do not make any statements that could be perceived as derogatory or threatening to any potential reader. 

Risks
As stated above, your story will be made public, along with your age range, gender, occupation and city and state.  Your story will not be readily identifiable unless it provides very specific details like names and locations. In addition, if you are recounting a negative experience connected with math, those negative feelings may arise for you while you are retelling the story. Otherwise, we do not anticipate any other risks associated with your submission of your story.  

Potential Benefits
We believe that writing stories about your daily experiences with math and reading or listening to other people’s stories will allow you to reflect on your own experience, and will allow educators and others to realize how important a role math plays in our daily lives.  In addition we think it will be enjoyable to read other people’s submissions.

Identity Protection
The demographic information that we ask for is not personally identifiable information. We may link some general demographics to your story, such as gender and age.  If you do not feel comfortable answering any of the demographic questions, but still wish to continue with the study, you may do so, and we will use your story accordingly.  

Compensation
No compensation will be offered for your Math in a Minute story. 

Rights of Participation
Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to participate, you can opt to leave this Family Math site at the bottom of this form. If you wish to withdraw your consent after you have submitted your Math in a Minute story, you can contact the Family Math project team and have them remove your story from the website or from the researcher file system. Contact information is below. You are under no obligation to continue using this website and you can discontinue its use at any time.

We think that writing your stories about math and reading or listening to other people’s stories will help you think about how you feel about math.  It will also help people to understand more about the ways that math is part of our everyday lives.  We also think you will enjoy reading stories that are posted.
